Data Specialist

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority, driving the global environmental agenda, promoting sustainable development, and advocating for the environment. The Corporate Services Division at UNEP safeguards the organization’s corporate interests, mitigates risks, and provides essential management tools, plans, and capacity building. It ensures efficient management in line with UNEP’s accountability requirements, rules, and UN core values.

This position, based within the Corporate Services Division, focuses on generating data-driven insights to support decision-making. The incumbent will report to the Data Specialist and will have the following responsibilities:

Contribute to the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs related to Umoja Analytics (SAP Self Service Analytics) and Business Intelligence at UNEP.

Identify opportunities for process improvement in data analysis for the UNEP Enterprise Data Warehouse.

Collaborate with data engineers and scientists to enhance data quality and flow.

Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, and strategies that optimize statistical efficiency within UNEP’s data warehouse.

Use machine learning techniques and statistical methods to identify trends and patterns in both structured and unstructured data.

Develop and implement corporate-level analysis, reporting, dashboards, and quality control systems.

Create, test, and operationalize secure data consumption APIs for internal clients.

Qualifications:

A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience in applied analytics, business intelligence, information management, statistics, project management, or a related field is required.

Experience in using data to inform decision-making and strategies.

Proficiency with self-service analytics and data visualization tools (e.g., MS PowerBI, Qlik, Tableau, SAP Business Objects) is required.

Experience with programming languages and databases (SQL, Python, R) is required.

Experience with Git version control and enterprise data warehouse design is desirable.

Familiarity with software development (e.g., asp.net, PHP, C#, Java, React) is desirable.

Education:

An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in computer science, data science, information technology, analytics, or a related field is required. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may also be accepted.

Languages:

Fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an asset. (Russian, French, Spanish, Chinese or Arabic).
